A Historical Field Trip in Delaware’s Quaint Villages

Now is the time to plan your trip and learn about historical sites in Delaware – including the capital and Kent County.

Start the morning in Dover, Delaware, home to the Air Mobility Command Museum (1301 Heritage Rd, Dover AFB, DE 19902). This museum’s outside aircraft ramp is open for free self-guided tours. Marvel at more than 25 historical military aircrafts ranging from an Air Force Two to a Galaxy C-5A.

Next, around the corner, you’ll discover John Dickinson Plantation (340 Kitts Hummock Rd, Dover, DE 19901). Learn about one of America’s founding fathers, signer of the U.S. Constitution and “Penman of the Revolution.” The John Dickinson Plantation is open for outdoor visitation with self-guided tours. Afterwards, make way to the Delaware Agricultural Museum & Village (866 N Dupont Hwy, Dover, DE 19901). Say hello to Lulu, the friendly pot-bellied pig while exploring Loockerman Landing at the museum. Discover life in rural Delaware from the 1890s with various exhibits featuring a Farmhouse, General Store, School House, a Barbershop, and more.  This outdoor area is open for self-guided tours.

Head to downtown historic Dover to learn about Dover’s rich history and the people who have lived here for three centuries with a free walking-tour of First State Heritage Park (43 The Green, Dover, DE 19901) (call ahead to secure your tour). The First State Heritage Park is also home to the Old State House (25 The Green, Dover, DE 19901) located on The Green. Here, you can take a self-guided tour of Delaware’s first permanent capitol building built in 1791.

Steps from the Old State House, you’ll find the Biggs Museum of American Art (406 Federal St, Dover, DE 19901). See various exhibits and collections from the 18th-21st century including contemporary art, American fine and decorative arts. (call ahead to make a reservation)

Later, take a self-guided tour of the Johnson Victrola Museum (375 S New St, Dover, DE 19901). Explore the life and achievements of Eldridge Reeves Johnson, the founder of the Victor Talking Machine Company. See exhibits including phonographs, memorabilia and several objects that highlight Johnson’s success in the sound-recording industry (call ahead to make a free tour reservation).

If you’re looking to learn about our local folklore, history and culture of our charming villages, make a stop to Milford Museum (121 S Walnut St, Milford, DE 199630), Smyrna Museum (11 S Main St, Smyrna, DE 19977), Bowers Beach Maritime Museum (3357 Main St, Frederica, DE 19946), and Harrington Historical Society Museums (108 Fleming St, Harrington, DE 19952). These quaint museums each tell a story about their town heritage with exhibits, memorabilia, paintings, artifacts, photographs and more.
